Commencing with an incident a student came to me, wanted to pursue law, and had opted science stream in grade11. Inquisitively I asked why not Commerce if he wishes to study corporate law and got the answer the pressure he was facing to opt for science subjects.
Here comes to the role of a career counselor, explaining to them what challenges, and hurdles they might have to face after choosing the wrong stream. I spoke to the student at length to understand his mindset was able to analyze his strength, capabilities, likes, and interest, and came to the conclusion
that the student’s passion was to study corporate law. I explained to the parents that if he goes for the science stream, it will create difficulties in achieving his career path, on the contrary commerce will help him to achieve his Goals.
Parents, please understand subject selection done on your expectations, peer pressure and societal influences will enhance the chances of low scores, and fewer chances of getting into a good college, moreover, it leads to dissatisfaction and loss of focus on studies that eventually affect the career. If a student aspires to be a writer or a poet opting for science subjects will not at all be the right decision as it will not give them a base instead he should opt for Humanities and focus on Linguistic skills and creative writing skills.
We need to understand here which subjects can help students in building a strong career base by assessing their personality, strengths, and future dreams. To add on, we can use scientific ways for a child to choose the best subject combination after class 10. Subject Selector tool considers academic performance along with individual strengths, interests, and Dreams.
